ADHD, Freedom, and a Life AI Can’t Replicate in Singapore
I’m 38 soon in Singapore. I don’t have the 10-year marriage or the “stable” 9-5 my parents pictured.
I do want a roof in this expensive city. But not if it means settling for a life I don’t want just to get there faster.
I have a blog, a backpack, and a business in the works helping ADHD adults stop settling out of fear.
I used to think “settling down” was the goal. Now I know “waking up” is.
And no AI can do that for me.
The Timeline That Felt Like Failure
In Singapore, “settle down” comes with a timeline: BTO, marriage, promotion by 35.
For ADHD adults with delays + trauma, that timeline feels like proof you messed up.
My brain learned: I'm behind. Take anything.
That’s how I almost said yes to the wrong jobs and the wrong relationships out of fear.
Urgency felt like safety. But safety without truth is just a prettier cage.
What I Chose Instead
So I ditched the 💡.
I chose travel. Real conversations. Building something of my own to help other ADHD adults.
Singapore taught me efficiency. ADHD taught me I need novelty. Life Path 5s need freedom.
AI can write a resume. It can generate 10 career plans in 3 seconds.
But it can’t sit with you at 38 and say: you're not late, you're becoming.
It can’t feel the fear and choose freedom anyway.
3 Questions I Ask Before I Say Yes
I use these every time the “settle down” pressure gets loud:
Am I choosing this or running from fear?
Ans: I try to embrace it wholeheartedly.
Will future-me thank me?
Ans: Definitely.
Does this give me more freedom or less?
Ans: More. If 2 out of 3 are a no, it’s settling.
You Still Have Time
I’m still building the roof. Just not on someone else’s timeline.
I write more about ADHD, career resets, and not settling on my blog.
If this resonated, email me at alfiemanojkumar@gmail.com and tell me: what’s one thing you almost settled for?
Let’s stop settling. Let’s wake up.
